Olivia Newton-John came into the world on September 26, 1948, in Cambridge. Her father, Brinley “Bryn” Newton-John, hailed from Wales, while her mother, Irene Helene (formerly Born), originally came from Germany. Irene’s family had relocated to the United Kingdom in 1933 to escape the Nazi regime.
Olivia’s maternal grandfather was the notable German Jewish physicist Max Born, a Nobel Prize laureate. Her maternal grandmother, Hedwig, was the daughter of German Jewish jurist Victor Ehrenberg and his spouse, Helene Agatha von Jhering. Through Helene Agatha, Olivia could trace her lineage to the renowned Protestant theologian Martin Luther. Helene Agatha’s father, who also happened to be Olivia’s great-great-grandfather, was the accomplished jurist Rudolf von Jhering. Additionally, Olivia’s uncle was Gustav Victor Rudolf Born, a pharmacologist. Intriguingly, she shared a familial connection with comedian Ben Elton as a third cousin through her Ehrenberg family lineage.
